Forged for Eternity: The Call to Christlike Character
you are becoming someone — right now. The choices you make, the way you respond to trial, and the depth of your surrender to God are all shaping who you are. The question is — who are you becoming?

“The greatest want of the world is the want of men—
men who will not be bought or sold;
men who in their inmost souls are true and honest;
men who do not fear to call sin by its right name;
men whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole;
men who will stand for the right though the heavens fall.”
— Ellen G. White, Education, p. 57
We live in a time when gifts are celebrated more than godliness, and charisma is often mistaken for character. But in the eyes of heaven, who you are is more important than what you achieve. You may impress the world with your talents, but God weighs the substance of your soul — your character.
In the end, when everything else is stripped away, your character is all you’ll take into eternity. That sobering truth should awaken every disciple of Christ to this urgent reality: you are becoming someone — right now. The choices you make, the way you respond to trial, and the depth of your surrender to God are all shaping who you are. The question is — are you being forged into the image of Christ?
Character Must Be Developed — It’s the Work of a Lifetime
Salvation is a free gift — but character must be formed. You can’t inherit godly character. You can’t pray it into existence overnight. It is built, choice by choice, as we walk in obedience with Christ.
“The formation of a noble character is the work of a lifetime, and must be the result of diligent effort. God gives opportunities; success depends upon the use made of them.”
— Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 223
This is not salvation by works — this is cooperation with grace. God works in us — but we must also work out our salvation (Philippians 2:12–13). The apostle Peter gives us the blueprint:
“Add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.”
— 2 Peter 1:5–7
Each of these qualities is forged over time, not received in an instant. Like a tree growing toward the sun, our character must daily stretch toward Christ.
Practical step: Identify one area of your character God is working on — patience, purity, truthfulness, self-control. Ask the Holy Spirit each morning to develop that trait in you. Journal your growth.
Trials Are God’s Workshop for Refining Character
No one enjoys hardship. But from God’s perspective, trials are not roadblocks — they are refining fires. They reveal what is weak and strengthen what is good. Every hardship is an opportunity for transformation.
“It is through the test of trial that the Christian character is developed.”
— The Ministry of Healing, p. 471
The early Christians understood this:
“We glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope.”
— Romans 5:3–4
God is not cruel when He allows hardship — He is intentional. He sees the finished product even when we see only brokenness.
Think of Joseph — falsely accused, betrayed, forgotten in prison — but God used every moment to forge a leader. Think of Daniel — standing firm in Babylon’s corrupt court, shaped in the fire of compromise and test. Their greatness was born in adversity.
Practical step: The next time you face frustration, delay, or disappointment, pause and pray:
“Lord, how do You want to shape me through this?”
Then respond with surrender, not resistance.
Perfection Is the Goal — Through Daily Surrender
Let this truth settle in your soul: God is calling you to perfection. Not perfectionism or self-righteousness — but perfection of character through full surrender.
Jesus said it plainly:
“Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.”
— Matthew 5:48
This may seem impossible — and it is, in our strength. But the gospel is not about doing the impossible in your power. It’s about Christ living His life in you through the Spirit.
“Moral perfection is required of all. Never should we lower the standard of righteousness in order to accommodate inherited or cultivated tendencies to wrong-doing... We are to overcome through the grace given us of God.”
— My Life Today, Sept. 24
Too many believers settle for spiritual mediocrity, thinking perfection is only for heaven. But the journey starts now. Christ wants to reproduce His character in you, today. The perfection God asks for is simply a heart that says:
“Lord, I am completely Yours. Shape me. Mold me. Live through me.”
Practical step: Begin each day with a full surrender prayer:
“Father, I give You my mind, my desires, my words, and my will. Let the life of Jesus be seen in me today.”
The Holy Spirit Is the Power That Transforms
You cannot grit your teeth into godliness. The Christian life is not behavior modification. It is supernatural transformation. Only the Holy Spirit can produce the fruit of Christlike character in you.
“The Holy Spirit is the author of the new life. Unless a man is born of the Spirit, he cannot become a partaker of the divine nature.”
— The Desire of Ages, p. 172
Jesus said:
“Without Me you can do nothing.” – John 15:5
This means you must live in daily dependence on the Spirit — not just during devotions, but moment by moment throughout the day. Victory over pride, impurity, laziness, or fear comes not by your willpower, but by your surrender.
Practical step:
Invite the Holy Spirit into every decision: “Lord, how do You want me to respond here?”
Listen. Obey. Depend.
Conclusion: Who Are You Becoming?
The question is not whether your character is being shaped — it is.
The real question is: Are you becoming more like Jesus, or less?
“A character formed according to the divine likeness is the only treasure that we can take from this world to the next.”
— Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 332
What you are becoming matters for eternity.
This is not the time to drift. This is not the time to be spiritually casual. This is the time to fall on your knees, cry out to God, and cooperate with the Spirit’s work in you.
The world doesn’t need more influencers — it needs men and women of character. People whose lives reflect Jesus. People who are trustworthy, surrendered, and filled with the Spirit.
Your Call Today:
Examine your character — where is God convicting you to grow?
Embrace your trials — what if that difficulty is the tool to shape you?
Surrender your will — let Jesus live His life in you.
Walk in the Spirit — lean not on your own strength, but God’s.
Final Word:
You are being forged for eternity. Let the fire do its work. Let the Spirit have His way. One day soon, when Jesus returns, may He find His character reflected in yours.
“When the character of Christ shall be perfectly reproduced in His people, then He will come to claim them as His own.”
— Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 69
Let that day be soon — and let it start with you.
